1. AIADMK Politics is Low Comedy: Chidambaram

Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday said Tamil Nadu Assembly had 233 members and Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao should not allow time to artificially alter the strength of the House.

He has tweeted: “AIADMK politics is low comedy turning into farce. Where is the Governor?”

“Tamil Nadu is heading for a situation similar to what happened in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” Mr. Chidambaram added.

2. Metro Tunnelling Draws to a Close

What started five years ago with the arrival of two tunnel boring machines (TBM) to create an engineering marvel in the city will come to an end this October, after the construction of 24 km of tunnels.

A total of 12 machines and hundreds of workers came to the city from countries, such as China and Russia and drilled the earth relentlessly for five years. That mammoth work will finally end for both Phase I of the project and the Phase I extension in the next two months.

3. Venkaiah Calls For Unity Against Social Evils

In his first visit to Tamil Nadu after assuming office, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday called for unity against various social evils such as corruption, casteism, communalism, terrorism, illiteracy, black money and gender discrimination.

Delivering a speech at a function organised on the occasion of 75 years of the Quit India Movement, Mr. Naidu referred to the “mindless violence” in some parts of the country recently and said: “If there is tension, there cannot be attention towards development. Tension should not be allowed at all.”

4. Nearly 3000 Legal Notices Served in Anti-Mosquito Drive

With the State fighting a battle against fever, especially dengue, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) has begun taking legal action against those who do not clear mosquito breeding sources from their premises. Around 3,000 notices have been issued by local bodies across the State, said Director of Public Health, K. Kolandaisamy.

In an order issued to the deputy directors of health services in all districts earlier this week, the DPH has called for the strict enforcement of the various provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939, and in cases where health education fails, to take the legal approach.

5. 2 Children Die in Wall Collapse

Two children, both aged 7, died after a portion of the terrace wall of a house collapsed in the rain and fell on them in Pulianthope on Saturday evening.

Police identified the victims as Lokesh, son of Ramesh, a daily wager, and Vetrikumar, son of Senthil Kumar, a labourer.

The two boys were talking and jumped on to the nylon rope and started dangling from it. Soon, it began raining and the terrace wall, which is around five feet high, collapsed on them. “Hearing the noise, their family members and neighbours rushed to their rescue and took them to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

6. Australian Delegates Visit Koyambedu

The relationship between India and Australia has become stronger than ever, said Luke Hartsuyker, Member of Parliament, Australia, during his visit to the city, along with a delegation, on Sunday.

He visited the Koyambedu fruit market and spoke of how the agriculture production of both countries complements each other. “There is a great opportunity for us to provide products at certain times of the year and for your country to do the same,” he said.

Mr Hartsuyker said India had become one of the fastest growing economies, and in areas such as information technology, the country was regarded highly in Australia.

7. Gangster’s Daughter Found Hanging

Gangster Vellai Ravi’s daughter allegedly committed suicide by hanging in her house in Vyasarpadi on Saturday evening.

On Saturday evening, Kamala had gone out.

“When she returned, she saw her daughter hanging from the ceiling,” a police officer attached to M.K.B. Nagar police station here said. The police have registered a case and further investigation is on, sources said.
