Distinguished scientist and Padma Vibhushan Awardee Professor Yash Pal passed away in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The cause of death of the 90-year-old could not be immediately ascertained. He recovered from cancer a few years ago.
Pal was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour, in 2013 for his contribution to the field of science. He made significant contributions to the fields of study of cosmic rays, high-energy physics, astrophysics and development, to name a few.
Pal was the recipient of several awards, including the Indira Gandhi Prize for Popularisation of Science in 2000 and the Meghnad Saha Medal in 2006. He also served as the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, from 2007 to 2012.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to mourn the loss, as did a number of other prominent personalities.
