Trouble is in store for BJP MP Roopa Ganguly after Trinamool Congress workers filed a police complaint against her on Saturday following her controversial rape remark, according to NDTV.
Charging at the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, Ganguly made a shocking comment on Friday where she challenged TMC and Congress leaders from outside to send women members of their families to West Bengal to see if they can survive without being raped within 15 days.
I dare all the parties, the ones who keep flattering the West Bengal Government and the Congress, to send their daughters, sisters-in-law, wives to Bengal, without taking any hospitality from Mamata Banerjee. The actor-turned-politician’s bizarre remark comes as the state’s Basirhat district has been hit by communal violence following an offensive Facebook post by a youth and the unrest in Darjeeling over demand by Gorkhas for a separate state.
Reiterating her statement on Saturday, she told ANI that “even 15 days is too much” and that women won’t be able to stay safe even for a fortnight.
BJP, while supporting Ganguly, said that instead of giving importance to the literal meaning of the remark, the focus must be on the subject matter.
“Don't go by the words; go by the feeling behind it. What Roopa said is not wrong. The situation of women is very bad in the state. The wordings used may have been altered, but her stance is not incorrect. She has spoken on what the situation is presently,” BJP leader Rahul Sinha told ANI.
