“Offensive” Kedarnath Photo Sparks Communal Tension in Uttarakhand

Communal tensions broke out in Uttarakhand’s Satpuli on Sunday over an allegedly “offensive picture” of the Kedarnath Temple that was posted on Facebook, Hindustan Times reported.

Activists affiliated to Bajrang Dal and other right wing organisations reportedly vandalized a vegetable shop owned by the family of the minor who allegedly posted the “offensive picture” on Facebook.

Quoting eye witnesses, Hindustan Times reported a Bajrang Dal worker as vowing to continue the protest until the culprit is arrested on a video footage of the incident. Another eye witness told HT that several right-wing activists burnt vegetable boxes in the shop while shouting pro-Hindu slogans.

Security reinforcements were sent to Satpuli area of the Pauri Garhwal district from the nearby area of Kotdwar. SP Jagatram Joshi said that they have identified the minor in question, adding that the post shared by the boy was “inflammatory” in nature.

Satpuli which has four to five Muslim families has never had previously not faced an incidents of communal violence.
