India is all set to get Rs 200 notes, for the first time ever.
In a press statement on 24 August, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that it will issue Rs 200 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series from select RBI offices, and some banks on 25 August. The notes will bear signature of RBI Governor Urjit Patel, and motif of Sanchi Stupa on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage. The base colour of the note is bright yellow.
The note has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse.
On 18 August, the RBI issued a notification stating that the central bank would soon issue Rs 50 denomination banknotes with a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi in the front and a motif of Hampi chariot at the back. However, the current Rs 50 notes would continue to be legal tender, the RBI added.

"There is no other denomination available between Rs 100 and Rs 500, and the RBI is expecting Rs 200 notes to become very popular. That's why it is taking every step to ensure availability of it," a source told The Times of India.
In November 2016, new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 bank notes were issued as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bid to curb the flow of black money in the economy. The government drew flak for the move for failing to adequately plan the demonetisation.
How to Identify a Fake RS 200 Note
How do you differentiate between a real Rs 200 note and a fake one? Here are some features that will help you verify authenticity of the notes:
Obverse (Front)
- See through register with denominational numeral 200
- Latent image with denominational numeral 200
- Denominational numeral २०० in Devnagari
- Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre
- Micro letters ‘RBI’, ‘भारत’, ‘India’ and ‘200’
- Windowed security thread with inscriptions ‘भारत’ and RBI with colour shift. Colour of the thread changes from green to blue when the note is tilted
- Guarantee Clause, Governor’s signature with Promise Clause and RBI emblem towards right of Mahatma Gandhi portrait
- Denominational numeral with Rupee Symbol, ₹200 in colour changing ink (green to blue) on bottom right
- Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right
- Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype (200) watermarks
- Number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side
For Visually Impaired
- Intaglio or raised printing of Mahatma Gandhi portrait, Ashoka Pillar emblem, raised Identification mark H with micro-text ₹200, four angular bleed lines with two circles in between the lines both on the right and left sides
Reverse (Back)
- Year of printing of the note on the left
- Swachh Bharat logo with slogan
- Language panel
- Motif of Sanchi Stupa
- Denominational numeral २०० in Devnagari

- The banknote will be 66 mm × 146 mm in size
