Organised by the Students Islamic Organisation, the Iftar event at New Delhi’s Jamia Nagar brought together the families of Najeeb Ahmad, Mohammad Akhlaq, and Pehlu Khan. At the occasion, the subject of their deaths could not be avoided.

Najeeb Ahmed, who was a first year MSc (biotechnology) student, went missing on 15 October 2016 from his hostel. He disappeared after an alleged altercation with ABVP members in the JNU hostel.

The Delhi High Court has been caustic about the manner in which the Delhi Police has handled the case despite the gravity of the incident.

Mohammad Akhlaq was lynched by a mob in Bisada village in Dadri, on allegations of eating beef.

Fifty-five-year-old Pehlu Khan was waylaid by a mob in Alwar on 1 April as he was transporting cows for his small dairy farm, and beaten up mercilessly. He succumbed to his injuries two days later.
