Those involved in cow slaughter and illegal transport of milch animals for slaughter will now be booked under the National Security Act and Gangsters Act in Uttar Pradesh.
The directive has been conveyed to all district police chiefs by the state Director General of Police (DGP), Sulkhan Singh. The order reads:
NSA and Gangsters Act is to be invoked against those involved in cow slaughter and trafficking of milch animals for slaughter.
The order was reportedly passed under the previous Akhilesh Yadav government, but was not strictly implemented, reported Firstpost.
The move comes close on the heels of the 23 May Environment Ministry notification, which banned the sale of cattle for slaughter under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960.
