Shashi Tharoor – Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – on Friday sued Arnab Goswami, Republic TV’s founder and editor-in-chief, for defamation in connection with a story recently broadcast by the channel.

Republic TV in its inaugural week made claims of unearthing the “truth” behind Sunanda Pushkar’s death, making disparaging remarks against the deceased businesswoman’s husband Tharoor. Insinuations were made by Republic TV that Tharoor was closely involved in the murder of his wife. Pushkar died in January 2014.

Tharoor told The Quint that his legal team has moved a Delhi court, slapping a civil defamation case against Goswami, which would be taken up on Monday, 29 May.

It is a defamation suit which has claimed minimum damages of Rs 2 crore and has sought an injunction on Republic TV, restraining it from broadcasting or transmitting anything related to the matter.

Soon after Republic TV’s report, Tharoor rubbished the claims made by Goswami in a press briefing. Tharoor also spoke out against Republic TV’s allegations earlier, saying that what the channel has presented is a “distortion” and “misrepresentation of facts”.

He also accused Republic TV of trying to grab eyeballs by sensationalising news.
