Metro rides in the capital city will get a little expensive from Wednesday as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) board, on Monday, approved the recommendation to hike fares.
While the minimum fare has been increased from Rs 8 to Rs 10, the maximum passenger fare has been hiked from Rs 30 to Rs 50.
The new fare structure will cost Rs 10 for a distance up to 2 kms, Rs 15 for 2 to 5 kms, Rs 20 for 5 to 12 kms, Rs 30 for 12 to 21 kms, Rs 40 for 21 to 32 kms and Rs 50 for journeys of over 32 kms.
Passengers with smart cards will be able to avail a discount of 20 percent during peak hours – between 6-8 am, 12-5 pm and 9pm onwards. On national holidays and Sundays, there would be a discount of around Rs 10.
The fares will rise again from 1 October, when the maximum tariff would change from Rs 50 to Rs 60.
The DMRC has been pushing for an increase in fares since 2009, when they were last revised. But the process was stalled since the Central government hadn’t set up a committee to fix fares. A three-member panel was set up only in June last year.
