The Bill to bring back Kambala, Karnataka’s traditional buffalo-racing sport, was passed in the state Assembly on 13 February. The Bill to legalise the sport was tabled on Friday. The sport shall not be an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (1960), the Bill said.

The move to legalise Kambala comes days after wide protests in favour of Jallikattu, following which the ban on the sport was removed in Tamil Nadu.

The Karnataka high court had earlier banned Kambala through an interim order in November. The decision had sparked protests across the state.
