A 46-year-old bank official died allegedly due to stress on Saturday in Nellore, following 10 days of handling heavy rush at the bank due to the demonetisation of high-value currency by the government.
SK Sheriff was the deputy manager of one of busiest branches of State Bank of India in the district.
It was reported that he was rushed to nearby Jayabharat Hospital by assistant general manager of the branch, Sankar Rao, after he suddenly collapsed around 6:30 pm.
Later, his brother SK Shajahan took him to Bollineni Super Specialty Hospital where he died. Shajahan said that Sheriff was healthy but was stressed because of the workload.
He was very sad because customers were looking at bankers as culprits though they had nothing to do with demonetisation and was working from 8 am to 10 pm to serve them. He was hurt when customers locked the door of the bank at 7 pm two days ago, preventing officials from leaving the branch.Shajahan to Deccan Chronicle
Bank officials are working overtime and often on weekends too for the convenience of the people. Even after that, the increasing crowd in banks and ATMs had left the bank officials with extra work. Security guards too are having a tough time controlling the crowd. On Saturday it was reported that nearly 70 percent of the ATMs are not in working condition in the state.
People who got new Rs 2,000 notes are also facing a problem since vegetable vendors, grocery shops, are not accepting bigger notes.
Bank Cashier Dies in Bhopal After Experiencing Chest Pain
In another incident, a 45-year-old senior cashier with State Bank of India died after he experienced chest pain at the Ratibad branch in Bhopal on 14 November, police said.
Purshottam Vyas experienced chest pain and uneasiness little after 5pm, following which he was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
According to police, he probably died while on way to hospital.
"We have registered a case and started investigation," police officer C Mewade said while confirming the incident.
He said Vyas' body has been sent to Hamadia Hospital for postmortem to find out the exact cause of his death.
Banks were open on Sunday as per government's order following the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes.
People are queueing up outside banks and ATMs across country to either deposit or withdraw the scrapped notes or exchange them for lower value tender.
Bank employees too are putting extra hours to cater to the people.
