A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and AISA activist has gone missing under mysterious circumstances, police said on Sunday.
Najeeb Ahmad, pursuing MSc in Biotechnology and resident of room 106 of Mahi Mandavi hostel, went missing after an alleged altercation with a few students on Saturday night, they added.
A case under section 365 (kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station on the basis of a complaint by his parents.
An AISA activist said Najeeb, who joined the hostel a fortnight ago, had a brawl with some ABVP activists on Saturday night when they were holding a door-to-door campaign at the hostel for the mess committee election.
Najeeb allegedly slapped a student following which residents of the hostel asked him to vacate his room.
“It all started with a scuffle between two groups of students, but then an entire group of ABVP activists came to avenge it and beat him up,” the activist alleged. All those who tried to save him, including the warden, the JNUSU President and hostel residents were also beaten up.
There was a protest organised by JNUSU at the university demanding the JNU administration to immediately take up the matter with the police from the university's side, said a student.
The ABVP, however, has a different version of how events unfolded, reported The Times of India.
The report quotes ABVP Delhi joint secretary Ravi Ranjan Chaudhary as saying:
“Four of our members went to his room in Mahi hostel. One of them, Vikrant, a third year BA student at School of Languages, had a red thread around his wrist. When Najeeb opened the door, he asked Vikrant why he was wearing the thread. He then slapped Vikrant without waiting for him to answer,” Chaudhary said.
ABVP also lodged a police complaint, thereafter. “We also met the warden. The police had come to the campus on Sunday. This is a conspiracy in which JNUSU is involved. We only asked for his apology and didn't say anything,” Chaudhary added.
