Bengaluru police announced on Tuesday that Section 144 – Prohibitory Orders – will be imposed in the city till 30 September after the Supreme Court’s latest verdict on the Cauvery issue.
The move comes after the Supreme Court earlier in the day ordered the Karnataka government to release 6,000 cusecs of water from Cauvery to Tamil Nadu for three days from Tuesday.
The next hearing is due on Thursday.
On Monday, the Karnataka government told the Supreme Court that it cannot provide the Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu till the end of the year in response to the apex court’s order that directed them to release 6,000 cusecs of water everyday to Tamil Nadu.
In defiance of the SC order the Karnataka legislative council has passed a resolution against releasing Cauvery water to their neighbouring state.
The legislative assembly reiterated that in a year which has seen scanty rainfall, the release of water for crops in Tamil Nadu would mean no drinking water for people in Karnataka.
The Supreme Court asked the Attorney General to convene meetings of top executives of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to resolve the Cauvery water issue.
