On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Karima Baloch, a 32-year-old political activist, fighting against atrocities in Balochistan has a solid message for her “bhai” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We will fight our own battle, but we want you to be our voice,” says Karima, in a video message from Modi’s “sisters in Balochistan”.
Modi’s statement during his Independence Day speech about atrocities in Balochistan has hit a nerve with neighbouring Pakistan, who now say they will be sure to bring up Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly.
The first female chairperson of the Baloch Students Organisation as well as its party, the Baloch National Front, Karima took over after her predecessor was allegedly abducted from Quetta by security forces in 2014.
She’s currently in Canada, where she arrived after escaping a Pakistani military attack on Tump in Balochistan. She reportedly stayed underground for nearly a year, evading arrest, before she arrived in Toronto.
Karima will reportedly apply for refugee status in Canada.
