The Quint’s relentless reporting on Chhoti Nirbhaya, the 4-year-old rape survivor, has forced the Delhi government to act. The government has agreed to provide a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the victim’s family.

An assessment report by the Department of Women and Child Welfare suggests the following measures to provide assistance to Chhoti Nirbhaya and her family:
Long term sponsorship/one-time grant may be given in the name of the girl so that her future could be secure after attaining the age of maturity.
As the girl has to undergo another major surgery after an interval of time, expenditure of medicines and supplements, and healthy diet is required for her growth and development for long period.
The victim’s father, a daily wage earner, is also looking after an extended family of four adult members, and needs some additional funds to look after his daughter.
It is in the best interest of the girl that she should be financially secured, which may in future make her confident to live in society.
The accused should be awarded maximum punishment because he has physically and mentally ruined the life of such a minor girl child.
Chhoti Nirbhaya was discharged from the Safdurjung Hospital in Delhi on November 6. Within 24 hours of being discharged, her statement was recorded in a Delhi court. According to the Delhi government report, the child is in trauma and needs regular counselling.
