In what is likely to beat a world record, volunteers in Madhya Pradesh planted more than 66 million trees in 12 hours. In an environment drive that was done on Sunday, about 1.5 million people were involved in planting the trees. The campaign, which was organised by the Madhya Pradesh government, involved sapling being placed along the Narmada River, The Independent reported. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called it a “historic day.”
Volunteers planted more than 20 different species of trees.
The plantation drive was driven by the country’s agreement to the Paris Agreement, under which it plans to increase its forests by 5 million hectares before 2030, the report added.
The previous world record, also owned by India, was set in Uttar Pradesh, where volunteers planted 50 million trees in a mere 24 hours. The Guinness World Records observers monitored the drive and will confirm in the next few days that the campaign has set a new bar.
