Chennai authorities have reportedly removed 413 tonnes of garbage from the Marina beach in the wake of the week-long march against the ban on Jallikattu.
The New Indian Express reported that as many as 1,473 sanitation personnel worked in day and night shifts to clean up the beach after the protest.
The daily quoted an official as saying:
There are no significant damages caused by the protests. Some railings bordering the pavement have been bent but it would not take much to have them fixed or replaced.
During the protest, several volunteers were seen working to clean up the trash on the beach. Around 40 to 45 garbage bags were arranged at the time so as to allow the volunteers to collect the trash for disposal.
According to reports, officials of the Chennai Corporation were positioned in and around the beach during the protest in order to clean the area. However, the large crowds and police barricades made it difficult for them to do so.
The officials said that trash had piled up despite the efforts of the student volunteers.
