Were the makers of ‘Coffee With D’ asked by Dawood to mute references to ‘Don D’ in the film’s trailer?

The makers of the Sunil Grover starrer comedy flick Coffee With D have removed all references to India’s most wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim, from the film’s trailer. While the film’s concept is controversial enough, given that it’s a satirical take on Arnab Goswami’s hyper dramatic style of reporting and Dawood’s notoreity, the dialogues in the trailer, that originally referred to Dawood’s character as ‘Don D’, have been muted completely. That’s a curious thing to do, that too this close to the film’s 6 January release. This makes us wonder if the move was triggered by some pressure from D’s company.

In the uncensored version of the trailer, Sunil Grover asks a vegetable vendor, “Don D aapke yahaan sabjiyaan khareedta thha?”. The man replies saying, “Khareedta nahin thha, churata tha!” The hilarious vox-pop continues in mute, despite the fact that Don D was mentioned just once. Wouldn’t it have been better to mute or beep just the name, instead of the whole dialogue? Better still, why mute anything at all?

More importantly, will ‘Don D’ be muted in the film too? Now that’ll be a shame. Why chicken out in the trailer, when it’ll be almost impossible (and zero fun) to remove the gangster references from the entire narrative? The censor board probably has nothing to do with this since the original version is still playing in theatres, and has only been removed from YouTube.

So were the film’s makers pulled up by the gangster himself, or was a gentle warning enough to trigger the move?
