Actor Vikram, who has expressed his desire in several interviews on wanting to turn director, has finally made his directorial debut. The star hasn’t made a regular commercial Tamil film but a touching musical tribute that showcases the ‘Spirit of Chennai’ in view of the devastating floods that shattered the city last December.
With music by debutant composer Girinandh, the song exhibits the unrelenting spirit and determination of volunteers and government-appointed rescue teams who saved thousands of lives when the city experienced one of the most unprecedented floods in the past few decades.
Abhishek Bachchan, who plays a special cameo in the video tweeted about it earlier in the day:
The song also features some popular Tamil actors including Nayanthara, Nithya Menen, Suriya, Karthi, Prabhudeva, Siddharth and Jayam Ravi.
The Chennai rains and resulting flood was one of the saddest and debilitating events that the world has seen or faced, leaving the city and adjoining areas helpless, stranded without food or drinking water, even loss of life in many cases. What turned the world’s attention is not the nation’s wrath but how the city instead of crumbling and succumbing to it, rose en masse to fight back and save itself. A first, for any city. This touched me and inspired me as it did a million others and “Spirit of Chennai” was born. An anthem, a story that speaks of the undying spirit and love that people of Chennai are capable of.Vikram
“It also raises a pertinent question. Does a calamity have to happen, for us to reach out to one another? When I searched for a team to make this dream come true, a thousand kindred souls came together with the same compassion that Chennai exhibited, without a moment’s hesitation. Thank you Chennai for making me believe in “Humanity” and what it’s capable of. Thank you for making me discover the better person in me,” added Vikram.
