Winter may have come to India, but "Game of Thrones" fans will have to wait until 2019 to catch the final season of the award-winning medieval fantasy series. This leaves almost a two-year gap between the the final season and Season 7, which premiered in July 2017.

HBO on Thursday announced that "Game of Thrones" would return in 2019 for a six-episode final season, reported Reuters. However, the month of premier was not mentioned.

The channel also revealed that show creators David Benioff and DB Weiss will also direct the final season.

GoT is HBO's biggest hit ever with a billion viewers and an army of devoted fans.

The eighth and the final season of show is expected to reveal which of the warring families of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros will win, and finally, manage to sit on the iron throne.

Shooting of the much anticipated season started in October, and is expected to go on until mid-2018. According to Reuters, HBO's head of programming, Casey Bloys has revealed that multiple endings will be shot to avoid leaks.

The gap until the final season is expected to give author George RR Martin the chance to finish one or two new "Game of Thrones" books that he said in July he was working on.
