Remember this scene from Game of Thrones, Season one, when Daenerys and Khal Drogo got married? The shocking but absolutely thrilling Dothraki wedding celebrations that followed gave us many a sleepless nights afterwards.

It was also the real beginning to the epic tale in so many ways – Daenerys becoming the Khaleesi and her receiving the Dragon eggs, for a start. It holds symbolic value to not just our beloved fictional characters but the show’s fans as well.

That’s why GoT fans across the world are mourning the fact that Azure Window, the limestone arch on Gozo island in Malta that featured in the iconic scene, is no longer part of the real physical world.

The majestic structure, which also happened to be a national landmark, broke into the Mediterranean Sea after a ferocious storm hit it in the wee hours of 8 March. The result was this.

Malta’s Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat took to Twitter to express his sorrow over it.

With the makers announcing that the epic series will wrap itself up by season 8, it is extra distressing to see iconic structures that it has immortalised crumbling into the sea.
