Ram Gopal Varma is back and this time he has a chilling story to tell with Veerappan. The film’s trailer was just released and already it’s a rage on social media. The film is the story of Asia’s biggest manhunt-that to capture and kill Veerappan. The trailer of Varma’s Hindi thriller follows that of the film’s Tamil version titled Killing Veerappan.
RGV might not make much sense on Twitter, but he seems to have clung on to the art of filmmaking. The trailer gives a crisp look at Varma’s attempt at recounting the incidents that led up to Operation Cocoon, the mission to capture and kill the Terror of the South. The sandalwood smuggler was chased for 20 years through the forests of Tamil Nadu, during the course of which he struck terror in the hearts of authorities with countless murders and kidnappings.
The trailer of Veerappan begins with a quote by Voltaire: A society gets a criminal it deserves. A comparison with Osama Bin Laden follows; how it took 10 years to nab and kill Osama, while Veerappan made authorities chase him for 20 years before being killed.
The film’s find is the NSD-trained Sandeep Bhardwaj, whose transformation into Veerappan has been credited to make-up artist Vikram Gaikwad. The film also stars Shiva Rajkumar, Lisa Ray, Sadh Orhan and Yagna Shetty in key roles. Veerappan is slated for release May 27th. Aniket Khandagale is the film’s cinematographer and Jeet Ganguly has scored its music.
Going by the trailer of Veerappan, it seems that Ram Gopal Varma, who gave us contemporary Hindi classics such as Satya, Company, Shool and Sarkar before slipping into oblivion with duds like Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag, might have found his lost mojo.
