Majrooh Sultanpuri, a struggling hakim by occupation, stumbled upon songwriting when he came to Bombay in 1945. Although reluctant to lend lyrics to films at first, he found success soon after he was signed on for his first project, Shah Jehan (1946). Everything from Chura Liya Hai Tumne (Yaadon ki Baraat) to Aaj Main Upar Aasmaan Niche (Khamoshi) has been penned by the urdu poet and lyricist.
Majrooh’s lyrics were sombre and romantic. Perhaps, that’s the reason his songs have managed to gain such popularity; with timeless classics like Bin Tere Sanam (Yaara Dildara) to Pehla Nasha (Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander).
When asked to compile this jukebox, I was surprised to know so many of his songs; old as well as new. Even the recently resurrected track, Ja Ja Ja Bewafa from Tanu Weds Manu Returns has been penned by Majrooh.
