Delhi based music producer Sajeel Kapoor a.k.a. Sez On The Beat has claimed that he did not receive any royalties on the song ‘Mere Gully Mein’ from Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy. The new track with vocals by Ranveer Singh is a cover version of rappers Divine and Naezy’s hit of the same name and was released on Tuesday 22 January.
Sez took to Facebook to post a message sharing that he was not aware of or involved in the making of the new song despite having produced the original. He also claimed to not have been paid for the song, despite reaching out to the music label.
Here is his post in full.
Sez On The Beat is known for producing beats for rappers like Divine, Prabh Deep and many others. Sez was the producer for the original version of ‘Mere Gully Mein’ which is considered a breakout hit for Divine and Naezy, launching them into the spotlight. While both Divine and Naezy are heavily involved with the making of Gully Boy, (the film is inspired by their experiences) Sez did not work on the new ‘Mere Gully Mein’.
Sez has updated his original post clarifying that he has no issue with the makers of Gully Boy, but it is his original record label which has not paid him. The label has licensed out the original track many times including to the makers of the film, but Sez has not received his share for his composition. He also added that Excel Entertainment who have produced Gully Boy have been very supportive.
