Even veteran actors couldn’t save ‘Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi’ from being a total disaster.

Movie: Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi
Director: Sanjay Chhel
Cast: Paresh Rawal, Rishi Kapoor, Vir Das and Payal Ghosh, Prem Chopra.

The most memorable dialogue in Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi could well be used by a Gujrati politician contesting from the state . "Ek din akela Gujrat hi China se takkar lega!" And if I may hazard a guess, the politician would have elicit great applause .

Bollywood can churn out all kinds of things in the name of a masala picture. We are meant to cut the makers some slack, loosen up a bit ourselves and not expect logic and sometimes even decency, in matters of humour. And trust you me, I tried. I tried to dumb myself down enough so that I could laugh and giggle and somehow become the TG that this film would appeal to, but apart from a few stray incidents overall, I failed.

What's the story? It's about punjabis and gujratis and loads of stereotypes. Paresh Rawal captains the Gujju side and acts like the Gujrati Taliban. No videshi culture, music, jeans, films, non-veg – nothing is allowed in this primarily Gujrati housing society, somewhere in Mumbai. Rishi Kapoor champions the Punjabi side and strides in to wake the Gujratis up from their slumber with some raucous cliches. Loud language , flashy clothes, drunk dadaji, whisky loving papaji, entitled bachha ji and a mommy ji in blingy wrapping paper.

The punjabi munda falls head over heels in love with Patel’s gujrati chokri and then the most predictable and hackneyed of plot twists follow.

Now, both Paresh Rawal and Rishi Kapoor are consummate actors. Divya Seth and Vir Das are considerably good and Prem Chopra is a veteran. But there’s just so much that a good cast can achieve without proper direction or script. The stereotyping and Panju-Gujju jokes work to an extant, but without a definite plot and a story worth telling, it all just amounts to a lousily put together film.

Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi definitely tests our patience.
