Action-thriller Mersal, starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay has broken, and gone ahead to create a few box-office records following its release on Diwali.
According to industry tracker Ramesh Bala, Atlee Kumar’s Mersal has earned a whopping Rs 31.50 crore in India itself. Including the worldwide collections, the movie has managed to make Rs. 43.50 crore, all within the matter of a few days.
Mersal starring Vijay is about cold revenge which exposes the hypocrisies and corruptions maligning the medical industry.
The second movie for the actor-director combo, Mersal’s success is considerably greater than their first project, Theri, another well-received Tamil film.
Mersal’s ground-breaking records have just about begun. The movie is said to have earned more than Rs. 150 crore through the arena of ‘theatrical’ releases even before its official release date. At this rate, the film, starring actors Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen is expected to break-even for its distributors, by this weekend itself.
The box-office records for Mersal is a great personal victory for both the cast and crew alike, considering the many challenges they faced before its release. A legal complaint from the Animal Welfare Board as well as government tax claims, had threatened to halt or shut down the film’s release.
Mersal’s records can be likened closely with the ones enjoyed by Rajinikanth’s Kabali (2015) within Tamil Nadu, where it raked up about Rs 18 crores on its opening day coming a close second to the latter’s Rs 23.5 crore.
