Manisha Koirala has been missing in action from Bollywood’s limelight for some time now, but she’s making a comeback with Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic based on Sanjay Dutt. She’ll be essaying the part of Nargis Dutt, the legendary actress and Sanjay Dutt’s mother.

Koirala’s performances in Akele Hum Akele Tum, Dil Se, Mann and Saudagar, remain memorable and we’re craving to see her on the big screen again. After her debilitating struggle with cancer, the actress had made quite a few appearances in the media, but stayed away from full time acting. However, Rajkumar Hirani has chosen to cast her as Ranbir Kapoor’s on-screen mother for the much awaited project. Ranbir has had good luck with heroines from the 90’s, like Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai, and Manisha is all set to join the list.

Fantabulous director and a finest man 🙏🏻

As they say, not all bad things are bad. Manisha’s struggle with cancer was reportedly what made Hirani choose her for the role.

Yes, Manisha is playing Nargis ji. She’s a wonderful person, extremely sweet. We were thinking of many actresses. And while Manisha is really pretty and a fantastic actress, my primary reason for taking her is that she’s a cancer survivor and, having been through the journey herself, can identify with Nargis ji’s fight with the Big C. When we met, she told me a little about that journey.

Not just that, Koirala was reportedly treated at the same New York hospital where Nargis Dutt had been admitted. It is surely going to be interesting to see how she portrays the role of this iconic yesteryear beauty. Keeping in mind the fact that she has acted with Sanjay Dutt himself in films like Yalgaar, Khauf, Kartoos, Sanam and Baaghi; we think she might have a lot of creative detailing to bring to the frame.

The biopic is expected to release in December 2017.
