Filmmaker Geetu Mohandas' Moothon premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and was welcomed with loud cheers and applause. At TIFF, she talks to The Quint about what it means to be a woman filmmaker today and why she decided to make Moothon.

Hi guys. I am Stutee at the Toronto International Film Festival. With me is director Geetu Mohandas who will now direct the frame. Because this is her first selfie interview. Tell me what to do. Okay. She wants a top angle. Should we zoom in? Should we go out? Okay, we’ll talk about that but your film premiered here, ‘The Elder One’.

And there was so much of cheering and so much of love that you got. Not just from the Indian community here but there were so many other people – journalists who’ve seen the film and found it so interesting. How do you feel?

I am feeling so excited and so happy about this whole thing. And I studied in Toronto. So I was here like 20 years back, and for me, it’s like a full circle, you know, coming back to home ground.

So how has life changed? From Geetu the student studying here to the one who makes award-winning films?

Well, I don’t know. It’s nice to be back in Toronto. In fact, all my friends were here and mentors and it was nice.

Okay, now talking about the film, The Elder One. We’re not going to reveal what happens. We want you to see it. Of course, people here have received it so well. When do people back home get to see it?

We have the film opening in MAMI on 17 October. Moothon is the name and ‘he Elder One is the English title. So we have 17 October as the opening film. Immediately after that, we should have a theatrical release as well.
