Mani Ratnam’s new film ‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’.

After Kaatru Veliyidai last year, filmmaker Mani Ratnam is back already with his new film Chekka Chivaantha Vaanam. After the romantic drama of his last three features Kadal, O Kadhal Kanmani and Kaatru, Mani has switched tracks with a gangster drama. Chekka looks to be an action-packed change of pace for the director, with the trailer promising a family drama reminiscent of The Godfather and his own Thalapathi. Check it out below.

The story revolves around Prakash Raj’s veteran gangster and the battle for his mafia empire between his three sons Varadan (Arvind Swamy), Thyagu (Arun Vijay) and Ethi (Simbu). Vijay Sethupathi is also involved as a cop who has a history with the family.

The cast also includes Jyothika as Varadan’s wife, Aishwarya Rajesh as Thyagu’s wife, Aditi Rao Hydari as a journalist, Jayasudha as the mother of the family and Dayana Erappa as the love interest for Ethi.

While reaction to the trailer has been positive, particularly from fans of the actors, there are others who feel the film looks too bombastic coming from Mani Ratnam. As usual a lot of memes from the trailer have flooded social media, we particularly like the use of this still.
