The Quint caught up with Arun Prabu Purushotaman, director of Aruvi, to know all about what went into the making of the movie.

Aruvi came with very little fanfare but took the movie industry by storm with its hard-hitting storyline.

With its plot, characters, emotions, comedy, background score and storytelling, Aruvi is like no other.

Aruvi is the story of a 25-year old woman who is brought up in a simple household in a village and when she moves to the city as a child, she understands the misogynistic ways in which the world works. She is abused, raped, belittled, hypnotised and asked sexual favours in return for money.

The movie also pokes fun at the popular style of Tamil reality shows where men and women pour out their sorrows and struggles to the anchor who then dramatises the entire thing and proposes a solution.

The movie touches upon taboo subjects like HIV-AIDS and rape, infusing comic elements, but retaining the relevance to our day-to-day lives.

The brain behind the movie, Arun Prabhu says what made it pack such a kick-in-the-nuts message was the characters.

Whether it is Subhash, ‘Rolling Sir’ or Peter, each character was cast perfectly. Most of the actors were in the same profession in real life as well.

The script was written two years before the movie was conceptualised. Arun says the true challenge was to take issues that are most pressing in today’s world and present in a way that the traditional Tamil movie-goer will be able to understand and accept.

What next, I asked? Arun Prabhu smiled saying, more Aruvis to come.
