Netflix has announced that it will be screening 6 international titles at the Jio MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival 2019. The OTT lineup for the festival will include 5 films and 1 documentary which will be screened from 17-24 October across several venues in Mumbai.
Here’s the list of Netflix originals that will be screened at MAMI.
1. The Irishman
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci star in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, an epic saga of organized crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran. Sheeran is also a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. The film spans decades, chronicling one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa.
2. The Two Popes
Directed by Fernando Meirelles, The Two Popes is an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years. Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences. The Two Popes is inspired from true events
3. Marriage Story
Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, Marriage Story is directed by cademy Award-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach. It is an incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up and a family staying together. The film also co-stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta.
4. I Lost My Body
I Lost My Body takes us to a Parisian laboratory where a severed hand escapes its unhappy fate and sets out to reconnect with its body. What follows is a journey full of ups and downs and hope for answers about what caused the hand’s separation. I Lost My Body is directed by Jeremy Clapin and based on the novel Happy Hand by Guillaume Laurant.
5. Atlantics
17-year-old Ada is in love with Souleiman, a young construction worker. But she has been promised to another man. One night, Souleiman and his co-workers leave the country by sea, in hope of a better future. A few days later, a fire ruins Ada’s wedding but little does she know of Souleiman’s return.
6. Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator
This documentary examines the dramatic rise and fall of the controversial founder of hot yoga, Bikram Choudhury. Originally from Kolkata, India, Choudhury built a huge empire of wealth and a global fitness brand in Beverly Hills. But by the 2010s, as numerous sexual abuse allegations emerged and stories of his aggressive, cult-like training environment surfaced, the lawsuits started to mount and Choudhury’s unorthodox teaching style became front-page news. Bikram is directed by Eva Orner
The director of The Two Popes, Fernando Meirelles, will be presenting the film at the festival. He’ll also be conducting a masterclass. Mumbai will be Fernando Meirelles’ first stop in Asia for the promotion of his film.
