Kevin Spacey has issued a statement after actor Anthony Rapp publicly alleged that he made sexual advances towards him in 1986. Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed News that he was 14 when the incident occurred. “My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk.” He “picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me,” he was quoted as saying.
Spacey wrote that he did “not remember the encounter”. He wrote that he was “horrified” to hear Anthony’s story and offered his “sincerest apologies”.
“My stomach churns,” Rapp said. “I still to this day can't wrap my head around so many aspects of it. It's just deeply confusing to me.”
In his statement, Spacey wrote: “As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose to live as a gay man. I want to deal with it honestly and openly and and that starts with examining my own behavior”.
Twitter Reacts
Twitter did not take too kindly to Spacey’s post. Screenwriter Apurva Asrani reacted to the news and tweeted, “repression does strange things”.
Scribe Barkha Dutt slammed Apurva’s comment and said “Do not rationalise abuse of a child on "repression" of sexual orientation”.
Others lashed out at Kevin Spacey over Rapp’s allegations.
Anthony Rapp, in a tweet, said that he came forward with his story, “standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out”.
