Cast: Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapur, Tabu

Excerpts from reviews of Fitoor:

Fitoor’s plot has no central motor to power it through its twists and turns, and no discernible big idea to replace the critique of privilege and entitlement. Despite being residents of one of the country’s most politically volatile states, the characters are largely bereft of ideology. If the central tension is between the star-crossed lovers, neither Roy Kapur nor Kaif is capable of expressing it. The scenes between the pair are dead on arrival, and there is no mistaking them for anything but two wooden oars rowing in different directions.

Alas, Kapoor casts two attractive people where he ought to have chosen a couple of actual actors instead, and thus it becomes hard to care about the protagonists or their sundered hearts, and despite aesthetic appeal, what we end up with is — at best — a screensaver. Still, there is a visual deftness, there is music, there is a dreaminess that Kapoor creates. Unfortunately, the narrative itself comes together sloppily and builds exhaustingly, tripping over its own feet constantly through the last forty minutes.

A visual tour de force, Abhishek Kapoor’s exquisitely crafted Fitoor holds on to the soul of Great Expectations and imbues it with the spirit of Bollywood without letting the essence of one dilute that of the other. The screenplay sets the classic Dickensian tale in captivating Kashmir but is unable to justify the choice of location beyond projecting the hauntingly desirable heroine as a metaphor for a paradise torn between conflicting forces. There is so much to admire in Fitoor that it is easy not to be put off by its ponderous pace and lack of contextual detailing. Go for it because there might not be too many better films than Fitoor this year.
