The 89th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honoured the best films of 2016. However, the main highlights of the most awaited event didn’t seem to be about the winners only, but also about the political humour and Trump references.

“Maybe this is not a popular thing to say, but I want to say thank you to President Trump,” Jimmy Kimmel said. He added,

“Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist?” He was referring to last year’s Academy Awards, when no non-white actors were nominated for awards for a second straight year. Kimmel was implying that the Oscars seemed much less racist now in comparison to the last few two years. He also added, “Black people saved NASA and white people saved jazz. That’s what you call progress.”

You know, if every person watching this show – I don’t want to get too serious, but there are millions and millions of people watching right now – and if every one of you took a minute to reach out to one person you disagree with, someone you like, and have a positive, considerate conversation – not as liberals or conservatives, as Americans – if we could all do that, we can make America great again. We really could. It starts with us.

Jimmy Kimmel made fun of President Donald Trump for calling the media “fake news.” The comedian asked if anyone from CNN, the Los Angeles Times or the New York Times were in the building, and then jokingly asked them all to leave. “We have no tolerance for fake news,” said Kimmel, adding, “Fake tans we love.”

Jimmy Kimmel called on the audience to give Meryl Streep a “totally undeserved round of applause”. “We are here tonight to honour great actors but we’re also here to honour the actors who seem great but actually really aren’t,” Kimmel said.

Oscar Winner Asghar Farhadi Boycotts Oscars Because of Trump's Travel Ban

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who won Best Foreign Language film, refused to attend the Oscars in protest of President Trump's attempted travel ban. In his statement, read out by a representative, Asghar Farhadi said, "My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of the other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the US. Dividing the world into the 'us' and 'our enemies' categories creates fear – a deceitful justification for aggression and war."

Jimmy Kimmel added more fuel to the fire by saying, “We don’t discriminate against people based on what countries they come from. We discriminate against them based on their age and weight.”

Jimmy Kimmel caught up with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mother and told her. “Your son is an American treasure.” She mouthed back, “I know.” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tune for Disney's Moana failed to win the award for Best Original Song.

No Love for The Wall

Actor, director and producer Gael García Bernal did not miss a chance to remind the audience about his Mexican heritage before he introduced the nominees for Best Animated Feature. The reminder was an obvious reference to the president's plan to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.

As a Mexican, as a Latin American, as a migrant worker, as a human being, I am against any form of wall that wants to separate us.
