Emraan Hashmi will be seen in Tigers - a controversial film helmed by Oscar winning director Danis Tanovic. The trailer of the film is out and shows Hashmi in a very different avatar. The story is based on real life events and is about a salesman in Pakistan who works for an infant formula milk company. As he learns that the formula is making thousands of children sick, he decides to take on the system, address ‘corporate greed’ and bring justice to them.
Along with Emraan, the film features Adil Hussain, Geetanjali Thapa, Danny Huston and Supriya Pathak in pivotal roles.
The film is releasing after much delay, due to controversies surrounding its plot. It was premiered four years ago at the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Danis Tanovic won the Academy Award for his film No Man’s Land in 2001, beating Lagaan which was nominated in the same category.
According to IndieWire which reviewed the film, “Tanovic is a highly skilled director, and his crafting of this story in tandem with an excellent ‘everyman’ performance from Bollywood star Hashmi is surefooted and compelling.”
Tigers is based on the Nestle baby food scandal that hit the headlines in the U.S. in 1970s and the South East Asia in early 2000s. The conglomerate refuted all the charges and also witnessed a large scale boycott of its products. Later the boycott was officially suspended in the U.S. in 1984, after Nestlé agreed to follow an international marketing code endorsed by the WHO.
Clearing the air, Nestle also commented about the film on its website. It said “The events depicted in the film, which is set in the 1990s, seriously misrepresent the facts about our activities. The events in the film, are not at all consistent with our policy and practices on the responsible marketing of breastmilk substitutes, to which we are fully committed everywhere in the world.”
The world digital premiere of Tigers is slated on Zee5 on 21 November. Emraan Hashmi will also be seen in the Netflix original series Bard of Blood, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment. The actor is also working on the feature film Cheat India.
