Veteran Telugu Actor Gollapudi Maruthi Rao Passes Away
Veteran actor, writer and screenwriter Gollapudi Maruthi Rao passed away on Thursday at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 80. He was undergoing treatment at Lifeline Hospital in T Nagar after falling ill and succumbed at around 12 noon. Hospital sources told The News Minute that he was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.
The actor debuted in Telugu film industry with Intlo Ramayya Veedhilo Krishnayya, which released in 1982. The movie also starred Chiranjeevi and Madhavi. Apart from acting, Rao had also written dialogues for the film.
He is remembered for his roles in Kallu, Samasaram Oka Chadarangam, and Challenge. Gollapudi Maruthi Rao was also the recipient of many awards, including state ones for his literary works such as Rendu Rellu Aaru, Patita, Karuninchani Devatalu, Mahanatudu, among others.
Condolences poured in from the industry as well as politicians. Tamil actor Siddharth tweeted, “#GollapudiMaruthiRao garu will be remembered as a great writer of Telugu literature and cinema and a much loved artiste. Condolences to his family. R. I. P. sir.”
Mahesh Babu also offered his condolences. “Deeply saddened by the sudden demise of #GollapudiMaruthiRao garu. His contribution to the TFI remains unparalleled. We have lost a gem. Heartfelt condolences to the family and dear ones. Rest in peace Sir,” he tweeted.
Former Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu stated that it is a huge loss to the Telugu film industry and the literary world. “From radio presenter, editor, commentator, to author and actor, Gollapudi Maruthi Rao was a man with multiple talents. I offer my condolences to his family and fans,” he said.
