Twitter users have expressed outrage at the bizarre statements allegedly made by Telugu filmmaker Daniel Shravan, seemingly in response to the recent rape and murder of a Hyderabad veterinarian. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada posted screenshots of Shravan’s now deleted Facebook posts that blame “society and women’s organisations” for rape and suggest that women should carry condoms to prevent being murdered after being raped. He also allegedly suggested that women are raped because they refuse consensual sex, leaving men with no other choice.
He wrote, “Give a surprise to rapists offering them condoms in suspect of rape. Automatically they feel relaxed and won’t harm (kill) you after rape. Condoms is such a powerful security than 100 or 911 (because cops will come only after rape). Cops are also normal human beings who can’t predict or trace an unexpected happening event. You yourself can save using condoms. Even if they rape as you have condoms you will be safe. Be prepared psychologically when you go along. [sic]”
He added in another post, “Society and women organisations are the main culprits for this cruel death than the actual culprits. Legalising rapes without violence is the only way to control these types of brutal deaths. So that a rapist will be out of fear of society/court and leave her/him alive after rape. Government have to give an offer passing a ‘Don’t kill after rape’ or ‘Rape without Violence’ for above 18 [sic].”
His statements have sparked outrage among Twitter users, including actor Kubbra Sait.
