‘We’ll Miss You, Sridevi’: Co-stars Rajinikanth, Kamal Mourn Loss
Sridevi bagged her first lead role in 1976 with Moondru Mudichu, starring both Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.
Hours after actor Sridevi’s sudden death in Dubai on 25 February, actors-turned-politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth released statements expressing their shock at her demise.
Taking to Twitter, actor Kamal Haasan said that her stardom was well-deserved and her death is agonising. Rajinikanth said he lost a true friend and the industry, a true legend.
“The music of Moondram Pirai is ringing in my ears. I drew joy from witnessing the transformation of this child from a young woman to a dignified wife and then to a loving mother. The fact that I have to witness this (her death) too is agonising. My condolences to her loving family,” Kamal said.
The 54-year old actor died in Dubai following a massive cardiac arrest. Sridevi, her husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi were in Dubai to attend a wedding.
Sridevi began her career as a child artist at the age of four. In her first film, Kandan Karunai (1967), a Tamil devotional drama, she played lord Muruga. Sridevi worked with actor MGR in films like Nam Naadu and En Annan and with Shivaji in films like Babu and Bharatha Vila.
Her first lead role was in 1976, opposite Kamal Haasan, with Rajinikanth playing the antagonist in K Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu. The trio were later cast together in Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile (1977) – which saw Sridevi play the role of a village belle – and in SP Muthuraman’s Aadu Puli Attam.
Sridevi has acted alongside Kamal Haasan in films like Manidharil Ithanai Nirangala! (1978), Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu(1980), Guru, (1980), and Moondram Pirai (1982). With Rajini, she has starred in films like Gayathri (1977), Priya (1978), Johnny (1980) and Pokkiri Raja (1982).
