Sonam Kapoor has never failed to experiment with bold looks, especially at her Cannes appearances. Right from boho chic looks to elegant and royal gowns, the fashionista has tried and tested all and impressed critics galore. On her 34th birthday, we take you through how Sonam has metamorphosed on the Festival de Cannes red carpet.
1. Sonam’s Debut Look
Sonam’s first ever Cannes appearance back in 2011, may have disappointed many since she didn’t choose an Indian designer. But, it definitely made heads turn and take notice of an emerging fashionista. Opting for a Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown, Amrapali ring and a big smile, she completed her look with Chopard earrings and Ferragamo shoes. We absolutely loved the sheer delicacy of the fabric and the way it just fell perfectly on Sonam’s petite frame.
2. The Black Lady of 2012
During her second stint at the Cannes red carpet, she chose to go for a heavy tulle Alexander McQueen, which was a beautiful choice. It was one of Sonam’s first experiments and it paid off really well. She garnered a lot of positive response for this dress that she wore for the closing ceremony and was clearly the paparazzi’s favourite.
3. Little Miss Doll
At the Jeune & Julie screening, Sonam Kapoor looked like that perfect cute-little-girl-next-door in this beautiful floral strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress at Cannes 2013. The strapless bodice dress with over sized flower motifs in the voluminous skirt was paired with simple side-swept hair, a Sunita Kapoor (her mother) neck piece and pumps swathed with the same rose print.
4. The Desi Girl
Kapoor was a beautiful sight in this pale pink net saree by Anamika Khanna. She added the perfect international touch with the new age drape and the statement neck piece. The subtle make up gave the perfect balance to the desi cum international look.
5. The Feather Touch
This elaborate Elie Saab gown that Sonam wore for her fifth consecutive Cannes outing in 2015, got mixed reviews from the critics. However, the lime green colour and the feathery touch complimented her confidence, as she attended the premiere of Inside Out.
6. The Indo-Western Fusion
In 2016, the Ralph & Russo saree-inspired dress created magic as she looked a spotless white beauty. The cape and trail stole the show, while her simple make up and hairdo balanced the elegance of the look.
7. Experiment Gone Wrong?
Styled by Rhea Kapoor, Sonam’s 2017 Cannes appearance in this Elie Saab embellished blush pink outfit, failed to garner a lot of positive response. Though she looked absolutely radiant in the color, the haath phool and the long western danglers added a bit too much of glitter to the otherwise subtle dress.
8. The Elaborate Nude Gown
Dressed in a stunning tulle gown by Vera Wang, Sonam channelizes her inner princess and looks nothing less than a fairytale. The elaborate trail with cream and yellow detailing was fitted with a strapless bodice. Setting major beauty goals, Sonam chose the unconventional gen-z yellow and sparkle eye-shadow, oodles of mascara, on-fleek highlighter and glossy lips. The look was complete with Chopard earrings and that million dollar smile!
9. Ravishing in Red
For this year, Sonam chose to be more experimental with her looks. One of the looks that stood out was this extravagant gown by Valentino. Styled by Rhea Kapoor, Sonam paired this outfit with Chopard earrings. Sonam managed to pull off this look with poise and grace, as she has been doing for the past few years.
10. Sonam’s Take on the Tuxedo
Sonam’s emerald and white ensemble wowed the critics at Cannes this year. Styled by Rhea Kapoor, Sonam pairs Ralph & Russo couture with Chopard jewelry. This experimental take on a tuxedo was a risk Sonam took, and like always, managed to pull it off.
