The #MeToo movement, which began with Tanushree Dutta, has shaken up the film industry and many are vowing to create a better environment for women as well as better content.

In an interview with Anupama Chopra, Karan Johar spoke about the objectification of women in item songs. The director-producer has gone on record and stated that Dharma Productions will not feature any item song like ‘Chikni Chameli’ anymore. He also added that while ‘Desi Girl’ is not an item song, it’s songs that do not further the plot and are simply planted as a means to draw audiences in theatres will not be made under his banner.

“You've got to kind of make sure that you don't because eventually we are a very impressionable medium,” he said on the show.

When Katrina Kaif was asked to react to his comment, she said that she doesn’t agree with him.

“I feel it’s all down to the individual who is performing the song. Madonaa, who I’m sure we all know of, I don’t think she is feeling objectified. I don’t think Beyonce who performs in a swimsuit on stage is feeling objectified. It’s all about how you feel while you are performing that song. I can tell you, I never felt objectified in ‘Chikni Chameli’. I enjoyed that song. I enjoyed the dance, I enjoyed what I was doing. I didn’t even for a moment feel objectified or felt it brought any kind of wrong eyes on me. Not at all.”

Katrina also added that she has refused to do songs that have no context whatsoever. “It all depends on the angle and lens it's being seen,” said Katrina.
