United States senator Kamala Harris recently posted a video that shows her making a masala dosa with Indian-American actor Mindy Kaling. The US Presidential hopeful visited Kaling’s home in Los Angeles where they tried their hand at cooking and bonded over their shared South Indian roots.

Harris helps Kaling prep as the two chat about their childhood and Indian dishes they used to eat growing up. They erroneously refer to South Indian food as being “purely vegetarian”. Harris narrates an anecdote about how her family would only eat vegetarian food but her grandfather would cheekily suggest they eat French toast (which is made with egg) when her grandmother was away. They also bond over tales about their mothers and reminisce how they would ensure the family had home-cooked meals despite working long hours. Towards the end of the video, Mindy Kaling’s father Avu Chokalingam makes an appearance and briefly interacts with Harris, who tells him of the times she visited her grandparents in Besant Nagar in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Mindy Kaling and Priyanka Chopra are collaborating on a yet untitled comedy focussed on Indian weddings, the rights of which have just been won by film production house Universal Pictures. The story revolves around an Indian wedding and the cultural clashes that it sparks. The makers have called it Crazy Rich Asians meets My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Kaling will write and direct the show along with Dan Goor, the creator of cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The show will be produced by Kaling’s Kaling International, Priyanka Chopra’s Purple Pebble Pictures and 3Arts’ Howard Klein and Goor. The actor is also developing a semi-autobiographical show about a first-generation teenaged Indian American girl.
