Since its trailer released, Kabir Singh has been at the center of controversy. The film has been raking in good collections at the box office, but it’s also being widely criticized for the ‘misogynistic’ treatment of the story. The titular character and glorification of the toxic relationship between him and Preeti (played by Kiara Advani) have been evoking extreme reactions on social media too. While most people are shocked at the problematic nature of the film, some have also been defending it asking people to ‘not find message in movies’ and the debate continues.

Have a look at some of the tweets criticizing the Arjun Reddy remake:

Even Historian and Author, Hindol Sengupta took to Twitter to condemn the extreme portrayal of violence and patriarchy in the film.

“In a country plagued with violence against women, I feel nauseated that Hindi cinema continues to showcase the worst kind of violent, male archetypes like in #KabirSingh. I am all for creative freedom but is there nothing called a sense of social responsibility? Surely a balance?” he wrote.

Singer Sona Mohapatra was also actively condemning tweets that praised the film and the actors.

While these people called out the film, there were also others who defended the film and explained the reasoning behind Kabir Singh’s character arc.

A tweet confidently claimed, “Kabir Singh is not a toxic, misogynist, irresponsible man with a patriarchal mindset. Instead Kabir Singh is an idealistic, headstrong and imbalanced man-child with a golden heart, who only understands life in white and black.”

At the box office, the movie has been unstoppable. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Kabir Singh has surpassed the opening weekend business of Total Dhamaal, even though Kabir Singh released in fewer screens than Total Dhamaal. Not only that, the Arjun Reddy remake has emerged as the biggest non-holiday opener of 2019.

Kabir Singh has manged to rake in Rs. 70.83 crores in the first weekend of its release. A surprising feat indeed. Its business has only increased with every passing day.
