Deepika Padukone was born in Copenhagen on 5 January 1986 and was raised in Bengaluru. This diva used to be an absolute tomboy as a child. She was also reportedly a bundle of energy. In one of her early interviews, she revealed that before her sister Anisha was born, for the first five years her mother would say that Deepika was rarely found on terra firma. She was apparently always jumping up on tables, jumping off sofas and climbing atop beds. But the birth of her younger sister Anisha changed her. She became quieter and turned into a protective big sister.

Deepika’s connect with Bengaluru as a city has been very strong as she cherishes innumerable memories of her early years in the garden city.

As a child, she was always very interested in modelling. Her father Prakash Padukone once said, “Her first love was always modelling.” She used to go for ballet classes and used to walk the ramp even as a child artist. Academically she was an average student. She once joked in an early interview that she passed her exams in certain subjects because she was Prakash Padukone’s daughter.

Deepika reportedly had to drop out of college. She also tried distant learning but even that didn’t work out because of work commitments. She did manage to successfully tick SSC and HSC off her list. By then, she was a fairly successful model.

A former classmate of Deepika Padukone anonymously posted on Quora about studying with the actor. She said that Deepika was her classmate at Mount Carmel College for 6 months before she moved to Bombay. She wrote about the actor’s poor attendance, thanks to her extracurricular and professional commitments - badminton and modelling.

The days that she would attend college, her classmate recalls that she would come straight from the badminton court at Padukone Academy in her track pants, located in proximity to the college building. Despite being a supermodel she would be usually seen in track pants, jacket and zero make-up, her hair in a braid or a ponytail. This needed a special mention because girls in Mount Carmel college were especially fashion conscious.

She further adds, “I always felt she was quiet and well-mannered. Sitting in the last bench, not very studious, but a sweet girl.”

Modelling Days

As a daughter of a Badminton champion, playing the sport came very naturally to her. She worked really hard and even started playing at state level but she was always clear about what she wanted to do and her parents were always supportive.

It all started when one of her best friends at school - Kavya Anand’s mother Anila Anand who is a well-known model coordinator approached Deepika’s mother. While her mother thought that she was too young for it and needed to focus on her studies, Deepika was already in love with the idea. Thanks to Anila Anand, Deepika bagged some print ads. That was the beginning of her modelling career. Her mother would go with her for the ad shoots which would happen only over the weekend and wait till she was done.
