4. Saif Ali Khan and Viacom 18 Will Be Worst Hit By ‘Rangoon’

When a film featuring Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, opens to just Rs 6 crore on a Friday, it’s not a good sign. It’s worse when the film comes at a reported cost of Rs 80 crore.

Rangoon didn’t have an ambitious pre-release marketing campaign, the trailers didn’t exactly make everyone sit up and neither did the songs get popular enough to create a buzz for the film. It was to all boil down to how a majority of the audience reacted to the film on day one, the reviews and the word-of-mouth that Rangoon would generate. Unfortunately, the reactions were largely negative and that just didn’t help the film gather steam at the box-office.

Monday reportedly brought in just about Rs 1.97 crore for Rangoon, bringing its 4 day collections to Rs 20 crore. According to sources, the loss for the producer of Rangoon could be in the margins of Rs 40 crore, even after overseas collections, satellite and digital sales.

The director of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kabir Khan, an ex-Delhi University student himself speaks to The Quint about the violence at Ramjas college and threats against Gurmehar Kaur. The filmmaker condemns any act of violence and tells us that he is shocked that the state is not taking any action on these people who are going out on streets and beating people up.

At a principle level I think it’s really sad that any sort of form of not agreeing on any point or not agreeing on ideologies being brought down to violence. In a campus you are bound to have certain disagreements, you are bound of have certain difference of opinion, that’s what the energy of a campus is meant to be. I have studied in Delhi University, grown up living in Jawaharlal Nehru University. I have been a witness to this healthy debate always among students. I am really saddened by the fact that the student organisation of the right wing has reduced it to violence. You don’t agree with somebody, battle it out intellectually.

Hugh Jackman seems to be a fan of Bollywood’s King Khan. When recently asked, by film critic and journalist Rajeev Masand, about his last appearance as Wolverine/Logan, and his feelings on watching another actor play the superhero, the Australian actor candidly said “maybe Shah Rukh Khan could play it”. Now, that’s mighty impressive isn’t it, coming from Jackman himself? Over to SRK now.
