Sridevi’s 2017 film Mom has opened to great numbers at the box office in China, earning $1.64 million (Rs 11.47 crores) on day 1. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh it is even higher than last month’s Hindi release Andhadhun, which raked in $1.2 million (Rs 8.39 crores) at the Chinese box office on its first day.
As of Monday 13 May, Mom has collected Rs 41.81 crore over its first weekend, which puts it ahead of Hitchki, Padman, Sultan and Thugs of Hindostan.
Producer Boney Kapoor experienced an emotional moment as his late wife’s final film released across theatres in China on 10 May. He tweeted saying that he hoped that the audiences in China connect with the movie as well.
“Mom releases in China today. An emotional moment for me. Thank you @ZeeStudios_ for spreading Sri’s last film to such wider audiences. I hope people will connect with the film there too. @SrideviBKapoor @MomTheMovie,” he wrote.
Directed by Ravi Udyawar, Mom features Sridevi as a mother who sets out to ensure justice for her step-daughter, essayed by Pakistani actor Sajal Ali, after she is sexually assaulted. The cast also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna.
Sridevi won the Best Actress National Award posthumously for her role in the film. Mom has been previously released in 40 countries including Poland, Russia, the UK, the US, Singapore and the Czech Republic.
Sridevi passed away aged 54 on 24 February 2018 by accidentally drowning in a bathtub in a hotel in Dubai. The Kapoor family was attending a family wedding at the time.
