Sonakshi Sinha starrer Khandani Shafakhana is set to release on 26 July. In the film, Sonakshi plays a sexologist who is trying to start a discussion on sex, a taboo subject in Indian society. The first glimpse of the film guarantees a fun ride, with actors like Varun Sharma and Anu Kapoor. Rapper Badshah, who is making his Bollywood debut with Khandaani Shafakhana, is also seen in the trailer, playing the role of a Punjabi singer who is one of Baby’s (Sonakshi Sinha) uncle’s customers.

The Quint caught up with Sonakshi Sinha to ask her why she chose the film and how sex education can be incorporated in Indian society.

“I just think that that’s the society that we have been brought up in and you know this is the biggest reason why I actually ended up doing the film. It made me think that how can we not talk about something or make something a taboo when it’s the reason for you and me being here today? Why should sex be such a non-spoken about topic? And especially in a country like ours which is so populated. May be that’s why we are so over populated because we don’t talk about it openly. You know, so I think it’s a very relevant subject in today’s day and age, and I think that’s one of the most important reasons as to why I chose this film. I am one of those many people who has probably never had that conversation with their parents. Imagine if a person like me doesn’t speak about it in my house, you can imagine the state in smaller towns and cities where people also do not talk about it. This is also something that we should think about. So, we have just been brought up in a way that we can’t talk about it to our elders. The film also deals with this particular thing. In school, right in school. Like we are taught other subjects, I think this should also be a subject. There’s so much exposure today like the internet. It could be a boon or it could be a demon. Kids today, when they don’t know where to learn from that is where they turn to and they can get so much misinformation about sex and learn all the wrong things. So I think it should be introduced in schools as a subject.”

In February this year, rapper-singer Badshah had made the announcement that he will be joining the cast of the film. He took to Twitter to write, “Journey begins today. Need your wishes and blessings.”
