Jhootha Kahin Ka is Rishi Kapoor’s first film to hit the big screen since the actor moved temporarily to New York last September to undergo treatment for cancer. Directed by Smeep Kang, the comedy follows Rishi’s character and his two sons, played by Omkar Kapoor and Sunny Singh, who each end up being caught in their own web of lies.

Here’s what critics have to say about the film.

“The runtime of 133 minutes is far too long to sustain the farce, whose best bits revolve around the utter cynicism with which Varun and Karan try to fool their way out of situations. Most of the comedy is delivered at full volume. There are moments when Rishi Kapoor’s voice seems to be coming from the next seat rather than the screen and Manoj Joshi appears to be on the verge of a heart attack with all the excitement.”

“I have no idea why demeaning women is considered funny by Bollywood scriptwriters, but maybe they are on to something because the more vile the joke, the louder is the laughter amongst the audience. There was much tittering behind me as one character berates another thus: ‘patni ho ya panauti’. The lines pile up. As does the crassness.”

“But Kang can’t stop the humour turning loud and crass with double entendre slipping in, specially when it comes to women. It’s not just the sexist jokes, here the women are rendered deliberately vapid and inconsequential, unlike [Hrishikesh] Mukherjee’s sparkling ladies. The single biggest problem, however, is that the young cast is colourless to the core, unable to leave an impression. Their only strength, so to speak, that keeps getting projected on the big screen, is jiving with a group of dancers in the background on the beach. But even that is utterly forgettable.”
