History Versus Film: Ram Puniyani On Kangana’s ‘Manikarnika’
In Manikarnika, Kangana Ranaut is shown getting married to Raja Gangadhar Rao as a young woman. However, according to historical records, she was married as a child (she was about 14 at the time). Why did the makers choose to overlook that fact? To escape being called out for showcasing child-marriage perhaps? The Quint got author and public speaker, Ram Puniyani to answer questions about Kangana’s period film, based on Rani of Jhansi, which released on 25 Janaury.
Karni Sena, which opposed Padmaavat’s release, claimed that their name was being used in opposing the movie that showed the Rani dancing to a special number. But is there any way the Jhansi ke Rani story plays to the Rajput glorified narrative- honour, sacrifice, valour etc? Watch the video to find out!
