Ram Gopal Varma is working on a five part-series called D Company based on the life of Dawood Ibrahim, according to a report in Mumbai Mirror. Varma had previously adapted the larger-than-life gangster’s story into films like Company and D. Clearly the subject is dear to the director and this time he has promised to keep the real names of all the major characters including Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan, Abu Salem and Chhota Shakeel.
“The research came from my extensive interactions over 20 years with gangsters, encounter cops, middlemen and film people involved with the underworld,” Varma told Mirror. He promises that this won’t be another Dawood biopic, but will give a larger view of the rise of the D Company from a criminal gang to a terrorist organisation.
Ram Gopal Varma will reunite with his Rann producer Madhu Mantena for D Company. The last series Varma worked on was the ambitious Guns and Thighs, which released a scandalous trailer last year before disappearing without a trace. Recently he was in the news for announcing an ‘alternative’ Sanjay Dutt biopic.
