In response to various attacks against the trailer of Mulk, director Anubhav Sinha just tweeted an open letter to internet trolls. His previous tweet sharing the Mulk trailer on 9 July had received several comments claiming that the film maligned Hindus and obfuscated the “history of terrorism”.

He addressed the trolls personally, expressing pity for them.

“You don’t have a name or a face. Your family can’t tell anyone what you do. Your parents aren’t proud of you. Your sister isn’t, your brother isn’t and the worst, you don’t have a future. You will be dumped.”

The director then clarified who is and is not funding the film, responding to alleged claims.

“No it [Mulk] is not funded by Dawood Ibrahim. You can ask him. Not even Congress. You can ask Rahul. Not even The RSS. You can check with Mohan Bhagwat Ji. It is funded by Mr Deepak Mukut and his father Mr Kamal Mukut, a veteran in this business.”

Mulk is about a Muslim family that is forced to prove its loyalty to India after one of their members is found involved in a terror plot. Examining institutionalised Islamophobia in the country today, it is said to be based on true events.

Mulk is a very nice film. It is not doing what you think it is doing. It is not about your masters. Hindus or Muslims. It is about you and it is about me and mostly it is about us. Please do write back the real nasty ones, but do go watch the film. You will still like it, because I know, a bit of you is still alive inside you.”

Produced by Banaras MediaWorks and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, Mulk stars Tapsee Pannu, Rishi Kapoor, Prateik Babbar, Ashutosh Rana and Rajat Kapoor.

It will release on 3 August, clashing with Akarsh Khurana’s Karwaan and Atul Manjrekar’s Fanney Khan.
